China’s Tactical Patterns
China employs grey-zone tactics to slowly assert dominance without triggering an overt military war:
- Physical Destruction & Theft: Chinese vessels frequently employ ramming, water cannons, and the confiscation or destruction of expensive fishing gear, GPS systems, and catch. [1, 2]
- Seasonal Fishing Bans: China enforces unilateral fishing bans from May to August every year in the South China Sea. Vietnamese fishermen who defy this ban are systematically targeted, arrested, or fined.

They can fish plenty over here. Why don’t they settle in either Mexico, Central Americas, Caribbean, and South Americas. They don’t fish too much anyways. China was worse. They would rob the whole entire ocean. Why stay in Vietnam and be beaten by the Chinese? I have already left Vietnam. But the Chinese cannot steal my land in Vietnam nor loot nor rob my stuffs.
I’m not free labor. Nor interested in being humanitarian. They have to give me a lot of good stuffs. Those fishermen can work for me. So I can manage no overfishing also. I like “free seafood forever”.
